W95y2k Update Installation


for systems without IE4:

Start/Run Browse to W95Y2K.exe  and Just copy and paste: /C:"y2ksetup /ii"  

so the whole line is

C:\{your path here}\w95y2k.exe /C:"y2ksetup /ii"

You can do that too. 

   How did you omit that step btw?  Did you use Start/Run and the path 
   to w95y2k.exe then a switch?  I'll have to check that.

 in the long run.  The instructions are explicit.

 Speaking of Ramona, I guess you've heard that she just did the w95y2k
 update?  She said she ran the w95y2k.exe from Start/Run, and used a
 switch to nuke out the ie4 part (snip)  I know you can just click on 'cancel' 
 when you get to that part about the IE4 update, but just as an exercise, 
 I would type this at Start/Run (I used _ for a space),  in the location 
 field?  My w95y2k.exe is currently in my C:\Alice\Setup\Pending\W95y2k folder. 
 I was thinking to move it to my C:\Alice\Temp folder to install, if the
 following is too long.

B. Advanced Installation Options
    There are several installation options available to advanced users 
    when installing the Windows 95 Year 2000 Update. You can view these 
    options at any time by clicking Start, clicking Run, typing 
    W95y2k.exe /? and then clicking OK.

    To use the optional installation parameters below, type
    W95y2k.exe <option>

    /Q - Quiet mode (skips all user prompts) - Useful for silent 
             installations in batch setups.
    /T: <full path> - Specifies a temporary working folder.
    /C - Extract files only to the folder when used also with /T - 
            Allows an administrator to download files into a specified 
            location.
    /C: <cmd> - Override install command defined by author (see below)

C. Additional Installation Options for Administrators
    System Administrators or Advanced users may want to simplify the 
    process of rolling out this Year 2000 Update by utilizing the 
    following options.

The syntax for the following options is:
    
    W95y2k.exe /C:"y2ksetup <option>" 
    Note: you must include the quotes as indicated.

   /ii - Ignore Internet Explorer version, and only install core year 
         2000 files
   /ai - Always launch Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 setup, and
          run silently
   /nr - Never reboot, without prompting.
   /ar - Always reboot, without prompting.

That looks right.  The Y2K file only contains the beginning part of IE 4
setup, though.  It would have to connect you to the Internet to download
the actual program (which takes an hour).  I'll probably just click
Cancel and have my modem unplugged.

Running the Win95 Year 2000 Patch Without
 Installing IE 4.01 SP2:

  By default as part of the update on systems where a version of Internet
  Explorer older than 4.01 SP2 is detected the update will initiate the download
  and installation of that SP2 version of IE4. As this entails an up to 2 hour
  download and requires a substantial amount of disk space (up to 72MB can
  be required, at least during the installation process) some users *may* wish to
  bypass the IE componant download and just install the "core componants" to
  update Windows 95 itself.

  Realizing this Microsoft has incorporated an optional command line switch
  which will launch the Year 2000 update and NOT have it check and look to
  update Internet Explorer.
  To do so one can do either of the following:

                   (A) Manual Method

                     1.Create a New Folder on C named Y2K and download the
                        W95Y2K.EXE file to it 
                     2.Click Start > Point to Programs > Click the MS-DOS Prompt 
                     3.Type CD\ and tap [ENTER] 
                     4.Type CD Y2K and tap [ENTER] 
                     5.Type W95Y2K.EXE /C:"y2ksetup /ii" and tap [ENTER] 
                     6.After the setup completes type EXIT and tap [ENTER] 

                        NOTE: Spacing is critical. Thats:
                        W95Y2K.EXE_/C:"y2ksetup_/ii"
                        where the _'s = spaces

You need to install W95y2k.exe over the existing patch.  Then you need to
install the Corporate y2k patch (don't worry about the Corporate part, it's
for us), which will remove the entry in Add/Remove and tidy up a few other
things.  The file that can't be found because it isn't in your machine is
part of the Corporate patch.

   I just downloaded and installed the W95Y2K Update to my Win95 OSR2 system
with DUN 1.3.
   Can I manually update VDHCP.386 , or should I wait for Microsoft to
release DUN 1.3 and Winsock2 Year 2000 updates?  (See below for more
details.)

   I can't find any references to Year 200 Updates for DUN 1.3 or Winsock 2.
   Is this update available yet?  (When is the last day of Spring?)

   I have previously installed DUN 1.3, and the above confirms that
VDHCP.386 wasn't updated by the W95Y2K Update.  Is it possible to manually
update the VDHCP.386, or will this cause incompatibility problems with
Dial-up Networking 1.3 or Winsock2?
