Does anyone possibly have a copy of the drivers they could send me, or know of another site where they can be found? Thanks, Stuart (snip) Steve S Forum Regular posted 05-05-2001 09:28 PM Hi, Maybe good luck. Here is a site that seems to have them but it is a Chinese site so it may be for the wrong region: http://download.softhouse.com.cn/static/driveproc/vision/STB/ Good luck if you decide to try, stuartherring New Member posted 05-05-2001 11:56 PM Steve, Thanks alot for that, the drivers there worked perfectly. I got both the WDM drivers and the DVD Theater software and it all works perfectly.. Stuart ------ NOTE: ------ I downloaded both files from http://download.softhouse.com.cn/static/driveproc/vision/STB/ and placed them on my site: http://home.att.net/~alicewyman/ AW DVD Theater for Win98 1264K Win98 2000-07-27 ftp://ftp02.softhouse.com.cn/download4/37690DVD98.exe DVD Theatre WDM Driver version 1.42 343K 2000-07-27 ftp://ftp02.softhouse.com.cn/download4/37691WDM142.exe ------------------------------------------- =======readme_driver.txt (from 37691WDM142.exe)============== STB DVD THEATER WDM version 1.4.2 for Win98 03/08/99 ---------------------------------------- Installing this WDM driver requires using the DVD Player that ships with Win98 or a player that works with DirectShow. We suggest STB Digital Theater 98, available to owners of STB DVD Theater. The player installed by the earlier STB DVD THEATER will not work. After installing this driver, the Win98 DVD Player will appear on the start menu under Programs->Accessories->Entertainment. You may right click it and drag it to your desktop - choose Copy when you release it. --------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT NOTICE CONCERNING THE WIN98 DVDPLAYER!!! On first install it assumes a rating of PG. This will causes pauses and skips in some scenes. To changes this start the "DVD Player", click on the "Options" button and select "Set Ratings". It requires you create a password, so you need to remember it if you want to changes ratings later. Under "Users:" it has "Guest". Click on "Guest". (Or you can set up users based on login.) Under the "Rating" drop down box select the rating you want ("Not Rated" for all). Click "Save", then "Close". Also see other considerations at end of this file. --------------------------------------------------------- NOTICE for ATI cards Install the driver version that ships with win98 (select CD-ROM as choice). The latest download from www.atitech.com causes the video to shake. The version that ships with Win98 does not shake. (feel free to contact ATI about this problem) It has been reported after installing the win98 driver version, using this driver, then changing to newer ATI drivers, that the shaking problem goes away. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ INSTALLATION WITH A NEW CARD (does not appear in the Device Manager) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Shut down your computer 2. Insert the STB DVD THEATER card and connect the video port cable to you graphic card. 3. Start your computer 4. It will find a new "PCI Multimedia Device", click "Next" 6. Leave the choice as "Search for the best driver..", click "Next" 7. Either insert a floppy with the Wdm1.3.x drivers and select "Floppy disk drives" or select "Specify a location" and select the folder the Wdm1.32 drivers 8. click "Next" 9. Leave the choice as "The updated driver..", click "Next" 10. "Windows driver file...", click "Next" 11. It will copy files. You may prompted for the location of "ac3dec.dll". Select the location of the Wdm1.3.x drivers. (NOTE: it should be the top item of the directory list in the dialog.) 12. Win98 will then initialize the driver for several seconds. Click "Finish" when prompted. 13. While it is not required, restarting your computer is recommended to insure correct initialization. You should now be able to put a DVD in your DVD drive and it will automatically start. The Win98 "DVD Player" now appears on the Start menu under Accessories->Entertainment. This is the default player for DVDs. One other consideration is turning on of DMA for the DVD drive. This is recommended. Control Panel->System->Device Manager Select the DVD drive under "CDROM". (NOTE: Be sure to select the DVD drive as other CD drives may have a problem with DMA enabled) Click "Properties"->"Settings". Check "DMA" Click "OK" You will need to restart your computer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION IF CARD WAS PREVIOUSLY DETECTED (appears under "?" in the Device Manager) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Repeat steps 1 through 11. It should work this time. 12. It will copy files. You may prompted for the location of "ac3dec.dll". Select the location of the Wdm1.3.x drivers. (NOTE: it should be the top item of the directory list in the dialog.) 13. Win98 will then initialize the driver for several (10 to 20) seconds. The mouse will seem frozen during this time. Other players may also be available, but the player you have been using will not work. 1. Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs 2. Select STB Digital Theater and remove it 3. Control Panel->System->Device Manager 4. Select STB DVD THEATER under DVD 4. Click Properties->Driver->Update Driver 5. Go to step 6 in INSTALLATION WITH A NEW CARD When finished, we recommend restarting your computer. NOTE: Aptiva users may experience a "video port" error because your ATI graphic card software does not get automatically updated with the Win98 upgrade. Control Panel->Display->Settings->Advanced->Adapter->Change Select "Search for a better...", CD-ROM drive. This will find the (atir) driver on the Win98 CD-ROM. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEMS FOUND WITH THE MICROSOFT NAVIGATOR / PLAYER ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FFWD->STOP->PLAY and SLOW->STOP->PLAY give no audio because the navigator "rate" is wrong workaround: PLAY->FFWD->PLAY Some subpicture text is not displayed in quick talking as compared to a dvd player. To enhance your enjoyment of playing DVDs in Windows98, we developed STB Digital Theater 98 to use in place of the standard DVD Player. INSTALLATION: Before installing the application by running Setup.Exe, you must have previously installed the STB DVD Theater card and the associated WDM driver for Windows98. The latest driver is available on the STB web site at http://www.stb.com/drivers/multimedia/mm.html. Install the application by double clicking Setup.exe. This takes you through a setup process that lets you decide where to install the application, add it to the start menu, whether to add the icon to the desktop, and if you want to make it the default player. If you choose to not make the default player, when you put in a DVD, it will automatically start the Windows98 DVD Player. Quit this application and then double click the STB Digital Theater 98 icon to experience a very user-friendly application. If you did not make it the default player on installation and later wish to do this, simply run Setup.exe again and make the choice. If you did make it the default player and later decide you prefer to not do this, go to the control panel->add/remove programs and remove STB Digital Theater 98. Then reinstall it by running Setup.exe. FEATURES: Zoom the window to full screen and back by double clicking in the video. There are buttons in the corners of the video window that let you control common functions. These buttons hide when there is no mouse movement for several seconds. Right click in the video window for more functions. The remote control has all the available functions. Leaving the mouse over a button provides a small text box with the button function. This application uses the Windows98 navigator to traverse DVDs and provide information about the DVD. While it is not required, we also recommend you install the latest version of DirectXMedia from Microsoft. DirectXMedia can be acquired from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ more specifically: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents/updates/DirectXruntime/runtimesites.asp Once again, thank you from the team at STB Systems, Inc. Got it up & running, although some items are less than clear. e.g. The previous STB DVD Theatre entry under DVD in Device Manager disappeared and now shows up under Sound Video and Game Controller. So what--It works. Attempts to get to stb.com results in getting to 3dfx.com which seems to be a Voodoo site..I guess they merged up or something. No reference to STB on that site that I could find. Wound up using the Windows DVD Player which seems to work OK. Want to thank you again for all the help. DVD driver Posted by: Alice (12.89.134.102) Date: October 14, 2001 at 11:20 June, I don't understand about browsing to the downloaded file. I would unzip the wdm driver download, 37691WDM142.exe, in an easy-to-find folder like C:\DVDriver and then install the driver as follows, based on the readme_driver.txt: 1. Open Control Panel->System->Device Manager 2. Select "PCI Multimedia Device" under "? Other Devices" 3. Click "Remove" 4. Restart your computer It will find a new "PCI Multimedia Device", click "Next" 6. Leave the choice as "Search for the best driver..", click "Next" 7. Select "Specify a location" and select the folder that contains the Wdm drivers 8. click "Next" 9. Leave the choice as "The updated driver..", click "Next" 10. "Windows driver file...", click "Next" 11. It will copy files. You may prompted for the location of "ac3dec.dll". Select the location of the Wdm drivers. ============================= The readme_driver.txt says: "After installing this driver, the Win98 DVD Player will appear on the start menu under Programs->Accessories->Entertainment. You may right click it and drag it to your desktop - choose Copy when you release it. " ------------------------------------------- Alternately you could install the STB DVD Theater software which is the OTHER STB file download from the Drivers page, STB DVD Theater for Win98. It is a little confusing since Allen refers to "driver" on both STB downloads Re: DVD driver Posted by: June (65.165.17.188) Date: October 17, 2001 at 14:33 Thanks so much Alice for assisting me with this nuisance. Hope the following info is of some value to others. I tried repeatedly to install the 37690DVD98.EXE and 37691WDM142.exe files which I had downloaded. I remember them downloading very fast even with my modem connection. I finally deleted the two files thinking perhaps they were corrupted. Then I downloaded the two files again from Alice's web page. Next I successfully installed 37691WDM142.exe and it has apparently taken care of my problem with the missing PCI Multimedia Audio driver when I boot up. In Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers I now have STB DVD Theater listed. Under Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment I have DVD Player listed. I don't plan to install 37690DVD98.EXE at this time so I'm not sure whether or not I can actually play DVD's. Re: DVD driver Posted by: Alice (12.89.143.103) Date: October 20, 2001 at 07:12 June, you must have had a bad download the first time around because I just downloaded 37691WDM142.exe from Allen's Drivers page and it appears to be the same file as the one from my Downloadable Files page, as far as I can tell by comparing the size (350,449 bytes) and looking inside both with Winzip (same 9 files). I'm glad the STB WDM driver install fixed the unknown PCI Multimedia Device problem. Re: DVD driver Posted by: June (65.165.17.148) Date: October 22, 2001 at 11:25 I definitely had a bad download the first time as when I finished downloading the size of each of the files was only 25 KB and each of them only appeared to contain one file! I still have not installed 37690DVD98.EXE but when I put in a DVD movie it plays okay with the WIN98 DVD Player. =========================== E-mail followup from June Note: June got the WDM DVD driver installed and the Windows DVD player working after 2 tries (that's why she removed the Win98 DVD player from Windows Setup and STB DVD Theater from Device Manager Sound Video and Game Contollers, since it was showing from her first attempt) AW "This is what I did. First I removed DVD Player from the Windows Setup in Add/Remove Programs. Then I opened Device Manager, Sound Video and Game Controllers and removed STB DVD Theater.I restarted and got the message about looking for PCI Multimedia Audio Device drivers. I directed the computer to the proper file when it asked for "ac3dec.dll" and it then asked me to insert the WIN98SE disk and said it was looking for dvdplay.chm. All I did was direct it to X:\WIN98 {X is your CD-Rom drive, normally this is G] and it finished installing without asking me for anything else! I really would have sworn this was what I had done the first time but guess I must have goofed again. I restarted and windows opened without looking for PCI drivers. DVD Player is again listed in Windows Setup and STB DVD Theater is listed in Sound Video and Game Controllers. A shortcut was not added to Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment but I added that. I put in the DVD movie I had purchased yesterday (The Wizard of OZ-Not much choice in this shopping area) and the movie opened perfectly! I don't think I will install the STB DVD Player. When the system configured itself, it could not find a driver for a device called PCI Multimedia Device (under Other Devices in System menu in Control Panel). I have been unsuccessful in finding a driver that works for this device - does anyone know what device it is and what driver is the appropriate one? Thank you.. Topic: PCI Multimedia Device (2 of 5) Conf: Aptiva 2140 and 2142 Community From: nbearnest Date: Monday, November 20, 2000 12:47 AM Assuming that you've already gotten all the Crystal Audio Drivers installed properly, the device in question is probably the STB DVD Theatre decoder card. You can get the drivers here: http://www.stb.com/drivers/multimedia/mmdvdth.html [STB site is no longer available AW] Since you probably don't have a voodoo3 card, i would go with the driver at the top of the list, because it's been tested & certified. Note the STB DVD Player software that came with your PC is now useless. To play DVD movies, use the Win98 DVD Player found in Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment. Topic: PCI Multimedia Device (3 of 5) Conf: Aptiva 2140 and 2142 Community From: salpietra5 Date: Tuesday, November 21, 2000 06:58 PM Thank you very much for the information. You were right. I had successfully loaded all Crystal Audio drivers and the PCI Multimedia Device is the STB DVD Theater adapter. I went to the stb website and downloaded the drivers as you suggested and exactly as the readme.txt defines. However, I have now run into a very nasty problem. When I deleted the device from System icon, rebooted and had Windows98 prompt for the drivers, I followed the procedure business as usual. When I got to the very last step (found the last file) it did not "Finish" and ask for the reboot. Instead it completely froze the machine ( I have a 2142 S6S). Further, when I powered off & powered on, Windows98 stated found new device, tried loading the drivers again (STB DVD THEATER driver) and again froze the machine. I could not find any way to get past the problem but to reformat the hard drive and re-install - ugh. (I have tried this process twice with the same results).
