3/3/98 Went to IBM Update Connector (Access Aptiva) and downloaded
updates, incuding -scrollpoint mouse, BIOS upgrade (made a floppy disk
with the upgrade) and 56K Modem driver upgrade (which created a desktop
icon). After restarting the computer with the BIOS disk in it, I
removed the disk and put it away. Then I double-clicked on the 56k
Modem icon to install. Then, after restarting again and going to
Access Aptiva, system froze except for mouse pointer. Called IBM.
They had me shut off computer, restart, and hit the F1 key when the
IBM Aptiva screen came on. I then pressed F5 to get a menu to reinstall
factory settings (See page 66 of the Aptiva Reference Guide). The
freeze-up had nothing to do with the IBM Update Installer, according to
IBM. .
3/3/98 11:30 am Couldn't connect to internet. Would dial but no connection. Called back IBM. Problem with 56k Modem driver update. Corrected problem by taking a check-mark out of "only connect at this speed" in control panel-Modems. Worked. Also called USR using hyperterminal at 1-888-877-9248 to perform line test (typed "line test" when it asked for name). Our phone line is ok for 56k modem speed , except suggested removing any added phone lines.
3/4/98 Downloaded file RealPlayer Plus 4.01 (promotional copy-good for
30 days)
Installed Real Player Plus, Real Player Plug-in for Netscape Nav. 3.01,
Real Audio Xtra for Shockwave, Real Player ActiveX Control for IE 4.70.1215.
This created icon on desktop, shortcut in Start/Programs. Got error
message when trying to take site tour . Uninstalled program.
By the way, during installation, got message that we ALREADY have Real
Audio Player 2.1 installed in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Found it,
it's 'raplayer'.
3/11/98 Installed WB Encyclopedia from CD-Rom. Installation
also included Quicktime for Windows.
Lotus Smart Suite installed. Adobe PhotoDelux installed.
Removed Lotus Smart Suite and Lotus Quick Start from the Start-up menu.
3/12/98 Froze up after double-clicking Lotus icon. Called IBM; they had me reinstall lotus from the Aptiva installer program, using 'install new program'.
4/8/98 Downloaded RealPlayer 5.0 rp32_50.exe and installed it (C:\Real\Player). During the installation I said ok to uninstall the old RealAudio Player 2.x program, which was originally included with Internet Explorer, as it apparently conflicts with the RealPlayer 5.0 version. After the installation the program had a GPF ("illegal operation") during the registration process, connecting with the internet. I had to close down and restart windows. Seems like it works, except it's choppy sometimes (something to do with the congestion on the internet). Removed the icon from the system tray (bottom right corner) by going to View/Preferences/Advanced.
4/15/98 I uninstalled Real Player 5.0, and, after reading the RealPlayer support webpage, I also deleted the following:
in C:\, REAL\Player (empty folders),There was one file that was supposed to be in Netscape Plug-ins, NPRA32.dll, that should be deleted, but it was located in Windows/system. I left it. I'll check it out.(later I deleted it as it was a 2.1 version)
in C:\Windows, RAUNINST,
in Windows\Help, RAPlayer.hlp (and RAPlayer.gid., although it wasn't listed, it had the same date),
in Windows\System, RA3228_8.dll,
4/16/98 I downloaded rp32_50.exe again and installed it. No problems this time. Registered the program
05/07/98 Installed Quicken SE. It installed Netscape for Quicken 3.0 (even though I didn't want it)
070698 Deleted Aptiva Desktop Customization "Start desktop effects" from Start-up menu Found out that "Start desktop effects" is actually the Mvsloadr.exe program (in C:\ProgramFiles\IBM\Aptdesk).
090698 Downloaded and installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.01(ar32e301.exe setup file) in C:\Acrobat3\Reader. Netscape Plug-in is named nppdf32.dll.
11/3/98 Added Recover.bat (batch file) to new start-up disk (Created
from windows/options/cabs)
Recover.bat contains:
C:
CD \ERD
Erd.exe
You type the above three lines in Notepad. Then you save it in
A: (with the Start-up disk in the A Drive) as "all files" (*.*) with the
name recover.bat. What you do is, after booting off the
Start-up disk, you type RECOVER at the A: prompt. This 1) switches
you to drive C:, 2) switches to the ERD directory, and 3) runs erd.exe,
which is the Emergency Recovery Utility program that I create on my C drive
to back up system and configuration files.
I created a New Start-up disk because the old one was made using the Win95 Companion CD. I compared both disks: the old was 981 KB. The new one (Created from windows/options/cabs) is 973 KB. Each has the same files (19), including hidden files:
Attrib.exe Himem.sys Chkdsk.exe IO.sysI guess that the Companion CD files are slightly different than the Windows\Options\Cabs. From now on, I'll point to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs any time that Windows asks for the CD.
Command.com MSDOS.sys Config.sys RECOVER.BAT
Debug.exe Regedit.exe Drvspace.bin Ebd.sys
Scandisk.exe Scandisk.ini Edit.com Fdisk.exe
Sys.com Format.com Uninstal.exe
NOTE: to create a System disk (for ERD) you go to My Computer and r-click on Floppy A (insert blank disk in drive). Select Format., check the box to include system files. Here are the Files created:
Command.com Drvspace.bin Io.sys MSDOS.sysWhen you run ERU, it adds to the disk:
11/17/98 Removed The Microsoft Network in Windows Setup (had to point to Windows/Options/Cabs to remove) then, after looking into the Program Files/The Microsoft Network folder, the MSN icon disappeared. Also the Start menu shortcut is gone. Posted to Microsoft general discussion newsgroup (mssg 11/10/98) about deleting this folder. It contains a Cache folder and the following files: [total 17, incl 7 hidden]
800950.dat Ccdialer.exe Engct.exe Guide.exe Moscp.exe Msnsig13.exe Msnver.txt Phone.pbk Signup.exe State.pbk Billadd.dll ccei.dll ccpsh.dll moscomp.dll mpccl.dll suutil.dll11/18/98 Delete The Microsoft Network folder in C:\Program Files and all contents NOTE: it is a read-only folder. Windows will ask if you are sure..... Found that the program ccdialer.exe is a registered file (associated with URL-Microsoft Network Protocol) in Explorer View Options File Types. Found it by scrolling down the list and highlighting every file. Removed two file associations to CCDIALER: URL-Microsoft Network Protocol (no extension) and Shortcut to
11/21/98 Installed Hewlett Packard 722C Printer Used the CD that came with the printer. The program is in C:\Program Files\HP Deskjet 720CSeries.
12/03/98 Went to Update Connector. It shows installed updates as:
56K Modem Drivers ver. 4.23--------
Bios diskette ver. BLXUS4k
Update Microsoft Axtive X component, COMCTL32.ocx
Scroll-point Mouse
Ibm Global Network access numbers
ATI Video Drivers v 4.35-c20eUpdated IBM Update Connector to version 2.01 (automatic)
Crystal Audio v4.05.2620 and DirectX5
56K Drivers for Lucent Modem v 5.18
IGN access numbers
12/04/98 Updated the ATI Video Drivers to Version 4.35-c20e using
Update Connector. Afterwards, I moved the desktop shortcut icon "ATI-Update
Connector" to C:\Alice\Aptiva Notes\Video Notes\ATI435 video driver install.
The shortcut goes to C:\IBM Tools\ Updater \Updates\ATI435\setup.exe
Printed out description of update, which includes directions for returning
to the preloaded drivers. . I also went to Display Properties and selected
"enable icon on taskbar". This allows you to easily access display settings
and help. Later took it off.
011099 Uninstalled the following, using the Aptiva Installer, and after a reboot deleted leftovers:
Aptiva on the Net (- leftovers in C:\Ibmtools\Aptivnet\ aptivnet.reg and upgrader.reg )
IGN Global Network Dialer (and the shortcut in the Online Services
Folder)
( leftover folders in Program Files\IBM Global Network)
also deleted the shortcut in Aptiva Internet Suite that pointed to
dialer.exe.
Welcome to Aptiva demo (Apthelp and Aptdemo leftover folders
from C:\ Ibmtools)
I later used tweakui to delete it from Add/Remove as it was still
there after a reboot.
Kids Room ( leftover Edmark folder from C:\Program Files )
2/18/99 Ran Update Connector and got the Crystal Audio v.4.05.2620 and
DirectX-5 update. Printed instructions
and printed a new System report from Device Manager. the cwcspud.vxd
was updated to
Version 4.05.2550 (along with a lot of other files in the sound, video
and game controllers group)
NOTE: anytime I was asked for the Crystal CD I typed in
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.
3/18/99 Ran the Y2kWin95 update and substituted the new Command.com into all startup folders and system disks.
(Note).Found out that the Realtime directory in C:\ has to do with the
Intel Video Phone and if you get an error message at boot regarding Wave
Task Manager or nspmm.dll you have to reinstall the Video Phone or disable
it in Device Manager.
[Native Audio Initialization Error: The WaveTask Manager[NSPMM.DLL]

Article: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q199/0/97.asp
3/31/99 Downloaded RegClean.exe from Microsoft. It extracted to
C"\Windows\Temp.
Moved the three files into a new RegClean Folder I created in C:\.
Created shortcut to regclean.exe and the readme file in Start/ Programs/Acessories/System
Tools.
3/25/99 Downloaded the lt518 Modem Driver update using Update Connector.
Rebooted. Closed all programs,
clicked on shortcut to install. Found new hardware screens came
up after rebooting, including Crystal Audio devices.
Update worked (verified driver level).
4/5/99 switched to single user in Passwords with Windows logon in Network configuration, and got everything working ok, except for the ATT Connection Manager, which I have disabled (chose not to connect when the internet program is opened) and have set 'connect to the Internet as Needed' in Internet Properties, so by clicking on an internet application it brings up a DUN window, and the Password is saved (I checked after rebooting).
I had to edit my helper application for RealPlayer, since it was pointing to Windows\System instead of Real\Player, but I guess that's because the RealAudio2.1 was originally in Windows\system. I thought I would have to do it in both Netscapes and IE, but once I edited it in NS4.04 that fixed it for the other ones. As a bonus, the music/crescendo helper entry in NS3.04 is GONE! I fixed my windows sounds, fixed up the desktop, and checked some more applications, even double-clicked a .mid file in explorer (remember it didn't used to play until I edited it) but that worked fine. Everything looks good. Just had to reenter wymette and password in AIM, had to set up some programs again.(Netmeeting, Inbox for Microsoft Fax)
did the switch with my Windows address book. I moved the
Wyman.wab file
and UserMPS.wab files out of Windows and into a temp folder,
then copied the
Wyman.wab back to Windows and renamed it UserMPS.wab. I opened
the Windows
Address book and it worked. I then moved my Wyman.wab back into
Windows, in
case I ever go back to my Wyman Profile, and deleted the UserMPS.wab
from the temp
folder..
I'll keep the Windows\Profiles\Wyman folder....this way if I have problems
in anything I can always go back and check it out. I can finally
stop backing up my profiles folder and don't get the Welcome to Windows
box.
4/5/99 I uninstalled Pointcast using the Aptiva Installer
4/5/99 I ran RegClean and had it fix what it found
4/28/99 Hwdiag.exe copied from Win95 Companion CD (in other\misc\hwtrack folder) and put in C:\Windows folder. Shortcut put in Start menu in Accessories/System Tools.
4/30/99 Copied Win95rk.hlp and win95rk.cnt from Companion CD
to C:\Windows\Help folder, with shortcut to
.hlp file in Start Menu/Programs.
"If you're looking for the Windows 95 Resource Kit, you
can find it on the Win 95 upgrade CD-ROM. To find it, Switch to the
\Admin\Reskit\Helpfile directory, in which you'll see several
files. Two are the Resource Kit help files, named WIN95RK.HLP
and WIN95RK.CNT. Copy them to your Help directory (\Windows\Help)
to access them easily. Once you copy the files,
create a Shortcut to WIN95RK.HLP on your desktop or in
the Start menu. This way, you can access them without inserting
the CD in your drive.".....from http://www.zdnet.com.au/wsources/content/951207/tips.html
5/4/99 Uninstalled Netmeeting from Add.Remove-Windows Setup-Communiations
and deleted the leftover Netmeeting folder in Program Files (contained
on empty received folder) after first copying it to my Savetemp folder..
5/5/99 Installed Netmeeting 2.0
6/4/99 In My Computer, Dial-Up Networking, Connection, Settings,
removed the check in
"Prompt for Information Before Dialing". Now it dials automatically
without clicking on Connect.
6/16/99 Dbl-clicked the W95powertoy.exe file in the Power folder.
Found cabview.inf, r-clicked,
selected Install. Did the same for tweakui.inf.
(first chose View-all files, unhiding extensions)
Put a shortcut to tweakui.hlp on desktop. Both appear in Add/Remove.
Tweakui in Control Panel also
(that's how you access it). Cabview (Cabinet File Viewer)
lets you view cab files (and extract) by r-clicking
the cab file and selecting VIEW. You can extract individual files
by copying. Put backup of w95powertoy.exe
setup file on floppy.
6/18/99 Installed SendToX Powertoy by r-clicking the inf file in the
Power Folder.
6/18/99 Removed the extra SendTo Mail Recipient items: MAPI,
CMC, and Internet Mail, by going to
Add/Remove, SendToExtensions, Remove. This gives a menu
of what to remove. NOTE: the file
associations are still in File Types. Will need to remove these
someday.
6/25/99 Installed Windows Media Player 6.1 using the Custom install
option. Selected ALL files,
including .mid and quicktime, which were not pre-selected. The
rest were. (copies of previous File Types
showing the associated programs in Alice\FileType Screenshots\OldType
folder) Chose connect speed 56k,
Shortcut on desktop. Got message about installing Multimedia
Component, DirectDraw, MP6-4 Codec, other
Codec's. Then it went to www.WindowsMedia.microsoft.com.
Tried ot MP# file, played it, saved it.
Tested Netscape (plugings still working).
7/11/99 in Control Panel, Multumedia, Audio tab, playback, selected SoundFusion instead of CS4236/37/38.
8/3/99 DLed ymsgr.exe (Yahoo Messenger) and installed in Program
Files\Yahoo\Messenger.
In Edit/Preferences: Autostart on boot, standby and wait for
internet connection.
8/13/99 Uninstalled NS 4.04. Rebooted Installed NS 4.61
Inserted CD, went to Start Run Typed G:\Windows\Setup\Win32\setup.exe
Chose Custom Install.
9/20/99 Got a ds socket error, when trying to open Update Connector
:
"A license file was not found or is incorrect for this version of ds
socket. Please contact Dolphin Systems at (519)942-0344"
.....then, Runtime Error 429 "You do not have the appropriate license...."
Sent email to support@dolphinsys.com, answer was to contact IBM support.
Found solution at IBM Knowledge Base: needed to do a find on
dssock32.dll and register the newer file.
at DOS Prompt, typed:
CD systemProblem fixed.
regsvr32 C:\Ibmtools\Updater\dssock32.dll
9/28/99 Did the DUN 1.3 Upgrade.
Ran msdun13.exe from Start/Run, (browsed to my Alice\Setup\Pending\DUN13
folder).
After rebooting, got message about missing files, directed it
to Windows\Options\Cabs for
- nwserver.vxd
- hosts.sam (had to go twice to Cabs)
Restarted PC.
10/8/99 installed Winsock 2 update. Did it by first CAD
and closing all programs, then
going to Start|Run and browsing to C:\Alice\Setup\Pending\Winsock2\W95ws2setup.exe
Got message that update was successful and to check the log file
in C:\Windows\ws2setup.log.
and, to Uninstall, run C:\Windows\ws2bakup\ws2bakup.bat.
10/25/99 w95y2k.exe run. using Start Run, browsed to C:\Alice\Setup\Pending\w95y2k\w95y2k.exe.
Then, at the end of the path, after W95Y2K.EXE typed:
_/C:"y2ksetup_/ii"
where the _'s = spaces, so the whole line looks like:
C:\Alice\Setup\Pending\w95y2k\w95y2k.exe_/C:"y2ksetup_/ii"
What this does is install the Y2K update without the IE4 part.
The only thing I noticed is that I now have the 2/19/99 date,
28 kb
version 4.00.956 of vdhcp.386 in Windows\Options\Cabs. The 4.10.1657
53.8 kb version in Windows\System was unchanged (same as the
Windows\ws2bakup version) as I expected, since I need to run the
Corporate Update to get a y2k compliant version of this file that's
compatable with the Winsock2/Dun1.3 update.
10/28/99 I just checked my older regclean undo files and I see
the C:\lotus\flg\org32.exe %1 lines. I checked in file associations
and I didn't find any association to org32.exe in any of my Lotus file
types. One thing that I did notice was my Lotus Organizer 97 file
type (or3) was completely without any associated program.
Tried opening the program to see what happens....
Well, I did a find on *.or3 and found one that I saw when I was playing
with Organizer: aptuser.or3. When I double-clicked it
I was asked what program to open with. Org32.exe was not in the
list. I chose 'other' and had to browse to the Lotus\Organize
folder (confusing since there's another Organize folder in lotus\work\organize
, where the .or3 file was), and chose org32.exe and to always open with
it (figured, what the hey?) Now my file types show the Lotus Organizer
file type opening with org32.exe and under edit the path is to C:\lotus\organize\org32.exe
"%1".
10/29/99 I added a Compact action, "c:\lotus\organize\org3rb32.exe"
and also a Print action,
"c:\lotus\organize\org32.exe" -print into my Lotus
Organizer 97 FileType
(I copied and pasted these paths from what Janice typed out for
me)
10/29/99 installed Shockwave 7.02 in IE. Unchecked Auto Update.
10/31/99DL'ed and installed Shockwave 7.02 for NS 3.04 and 4.61
11/5/99 Installed the Corporate Update (incl DUN1.3 and Ws2 Y2k upd)
11/14/99 did the telnet95 update.
11/16/99 Did the Fragmented IGMP update
11/18/99 Set the pc role to Network Server in My Computer/properties/Performance File System
11/21/99 File Access URL update done
11/26/99 Dx61core.exe done to install DirectX 6.1
12/5/99 Uninstalled Online Users Guide in Add/Remove/Windows Setup/Accessories.
12/5/99 Changed Virtual Memory settings to 60 MB swap file minimum (no
maximum) as follows
Rebooted, CAD and ended task on all programs, defragged, then went
to
My Computer, properties, Performance tab - Virtual Memory:
MIN = 60 MB
MAX= left as it was, size of free space (2696 mb free)
rebooted, checked win386.swp, showed 61,440
kb (60 mb)
12/7/99 installed Gravis Gamepad: shut down pc, plugged it in, reboted,
went to Control Panel. Game
Controllers applet.
NOTE: next time you run RegClean, if it removes the Game Controller
Cpl just add back Gravis Gamepad in
Control Panel
12/9/99 Changed Short Date format to mm/dd/yyyy in Control Panel, Regional
Settings, which was mentioned
in the Lotus Y2K informational webpages.
12/21/99 Ran Update Connector: -while connected, Netscape running,
20% into verifying system info, got error:
"An error occurred while trying to verify your system info..Call IBM
Service Rep." Closed UC and Netscape. Tried again, it worked.
Problem at IBM's end from what I've seen at IBM Forums and UAMB.
2/3/00 Installed Pacman from the Win95 Companion CD demos\Pacman folder.
It installed in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\ROA Trial Version.
2/5/00 Uninstalled Windows 95 Tour from Add/Remove Programs Windows Setup tab Accessories Details
Inserted HP ScanJet 5200cse scanner software CD and ran G:\setup.exe.
The default Destination Folder was C:\ProgramFiles\Hewlett-Packard\Hp
Precision Scan and I accepted that. -Got a message: "We found
a USB port on your PC..."
and the default installation type was selected as
"- Install USB Drivers (Highly Recommended" which I accepted.
Then the drivers were copied to the pc.
Then I accepted the other default option:
" - Energy Star Compliant - Scanner shuts down after 10 minutes
of inactivity"
(the other option had the scanner stay on for 12 hours straight
after booting up)
Then I got a message, "Install Finished", gt information on making
the connections to the pc, and I was prompted to remove all
floppy disks and shut down the pc. That confused me, since I still had
the CD Rom in the drive, so I removed it and shut down. Then I connected
the USB cable to the scanner and pc connected power cable to the scanner,
and plugged it in.
I restarted the PC, and got a message "New Hardware Found" and "Building
Driver Database". I was prompted to insert the HP cd, which I did.
I tested the scanner (scanned to printer and scanned to image file)
and it all worked.
3/3/00 Deleted 3 Online services setups from C:\Program Files\Online Services folder. AOL, Compuserve, and ProdNet.
4/7/00 Removed file association for SendTo Internet Mail Recipient,
SendTo Mail Recipient CMC and SendToMail Recipient MAPI
(already uninstalled in Add/Remove) - part of SendtoX powertoys
5/10/00 installed Startup Manager in Program Files\Startup Manager
5/13/00 Did a CAD to close all prg, esp ibmavtim, then used Add/Remove
Uninstalled IBMAV from Add/Remove and rebooted.
. The Autoexec.bat is now missing the IBMAV line as hoped.
5/13/00 Installed IPE antivirus I added Innoculate IT to System Agent, to run weekly using the command line C:\PROGRA~1\INOCUL~1\Vet95.exe C:\ /exit
5/26/00 Did the Dos Device in Path Name Microsoft Update
7/13/00 ADDED 32 MB RAM in slot 3 (right one) plus 16MB in slot
1 (left one) I flattened the tower and both dimms snapped in, after playing
with them a bit. I found that by leaning the dimm a little to one
side, maybe that brought it to the
90-degree angle it needed. I got the 16MB dimm in first, then
the 32mb. When I booted up, only the additional 32 MB registered
in My Computer Properties, so I'm running with 64 MB right now. For some
reason the 16MB dimm isn't
registering. Also, when I first booted up, everything was super-slow,
opening My Computer Properties,
then Netscape took forever to open. Anyway, I rebooted and entered
the Setup Utility, didn't
do anything, just looked around a little, then hit ESC then chose the
option to exit/save
changes.. When I got back to windows, everything was working normally
again, so maybe that
did the trick. I still only show 64 MB ram though.
NOTE: I later learned that it's common after adding hardware for Windows to run slowly
on the first bootup. It's also not necessarey on 2140/2142 systems to enter the
setup utility afte adding RAM, even though it says to do that on one of the IBM page.
8/22/00 installed the RTF Control security update. I now have
Riched32.dll 12/13/99 Usp10.DLL 11/30/99
Riched20.dll 11/23/99
9/12/00 Installed IE5.5
Got the IE5.5 CD yesterday and just installed it. (It said High
Encryption right on the CD!) Help About IE shows 128-bit.
Here's what I installed, besides the browser:
IE HelpI went to Windows Update (Tools/Windows Update from browser menu) afterwards .Got a security warning:
Microsoft Virtual Machine
Internet Connection Wizard
Internet Explorer Core Fonts
Dynamic HTML Data Binding
Internet Explorer Browsing Enhancements
Outlook Express
AOL ART Image Format Support
Visual Basic Scripting Support
Here's the Installation History. I didn't bother checking the other updates to verify installation (too much!)

NOTE: new progam running in background: Loadwc.exe (later disabled in
Startup Manager) -it has to do with Windows Profiles and IE5.5.
Also noticed new DUN connection screen. Selected "connect Automatically".
Tried Update Connector. Seems to work. Can't use acess.aptiva
exe fileor Help button on keyboard, says there is a problem with access
aptiva..
9/13/00 Installed WMP 6.4 from the IE.5. CD
I looked on the IE5.5 CD and found mplayer2.exe in one of the cabs
files, and since it was dated 11/12/99 I figured it had to be WMP6.4, so
I went to Add/Remove Programs with the CD still in the drive and selected
IE5.5, add/remove, Add aComponent and selected Media Player and Media Player
Codecs and installed just those two.
9/15/00 Downloaded and ran noscript.exe to disable the Windows Scripting
Host.
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/noscript.exe
(copy in Alice. Backup, and floppy)
-what this does is remove file associations for .vbs and .vbe files.
see noscript.txt file.
See http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/win.script.hosting.html
9/17/00 Went to Window Update, got new Critical Update: Scriptlet Rendering" and "Frame Domain Verification" 3932: Security Update, August 9, 2000 (version 5,50,4207,2800) was successfully installed. 6:56:58 PM Sunday, September 17, 2000
10-10-00 Changed security zone for Outlook Express from Internet to Restricted:
from http://vil.nai.com/villib/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=10509
Users may also want to disable "Active Scripting" in the "Restricted

11/6/00 MS Fax wouldn't work. Entry to it disappeared in the Scanner
"scan to" seletion box after the first attempt failed. Found out that a
setting was lost in Start/Settings/Printers/MSFax/Properties/Details
under "Print to the Following Port: (it was blank).
Made it "FAX (unknown local Port" (like it is in Ring Central)
and that worked. Sent Barbara two faxes, one by opening an rtf file and
printing to MS Fax and the other by scanning to MS FAX
Only problem, each time I opened the Inbox to check my sent faxes,
then closed out Windows Messaging I got an illegal operation, EXCHNG32
caused an invalid page fault in module AWFXCG32.DLL at 0157:7f7af33a. but
at least it works.

11/28/00 WMP 6.4 ASX Buffer update completed
1/26/01 Windows Update done - online in IE5.5 Security patch
Security Update, November 22, 2000 (Internet Explorer
5.5)
1913 KB/ Download Time: 6 min
This update resolves the "Browser Print Template," "File Upload via
Form,"
and "Frame Domain Verification" security vulnerabilities in Internet
Explorer 5.5
2/13/01 Installed IPE 5.2.5 custom install from new download. Also DL'ed user.pdf. Made new reference disk. Message about adding .prc file type for scanning. All settings saved. Deleted IPE5.1 from setup folder. DL'ed new virus update ipeup1132.exe and ran it. Zipped IP525 setup to floppies.
2/25/01 Made backup first, then deleted Dialpad US Web2Phone plugins in Netscape\Communicator Program\Pugins folder (dialpad doesn't work in Netscape)
The main plugin is npusvscp.dll plus
dpusnet.dll
dpusrtp.dll
tsd2.dll
a dialpad folder containing 2 .class files (inside a US folder)
2/28/01 discovered that DialPad Plugins can be uninstalled from
Netscape Preferences, Advasmced Smartupdate,
so I did that. Then I disabled SmartUpdate even though I had
the option checked to prompt before download.
(I had enabled it in the first place to download the Dialpad Netscape
Plugins)
3/7/01 Installed Adaware 4.0 , pc would oly start in SAFE mode. reconfigured adaware in safte mode removing alarm option, still would only start in safe mode. uninstalled in safe mode then pc booted ok.
3/10/01 Front Page Express extracted from CD and placed in C:\FPExpress per http://www.accessfp.net/fpexpress.htm
How to get FrontPage Express and IE5.5
Microsoft
is no longer supporting FrontPage Express (FPE) and it will no longer be
available
for download from the Microsoft site and have discontinued the Newsgroup.
You
cannot use the Add/Remove programs tool in Control Panel to install FrontPage
Express
after Windows 98 second edition is installed. If you try to downgrade to
an earlier
version
of IE 5, the same problem occurs. No custom install, no FPE. FPE does not
come
with
Office 2000 this is a concern for many educational facilities and not a
few others as
well.
There is a workaround solution however.
Take
out an old Magazine disc that has IE 5.0 on it (or below) and do a search
for this
file!
Fpesetup.cab
Once
you have found it, open it up with WinZip and extract all the files to
a new
directory
of your choice, and then double click on the fpxpress.exe file in the directory
you
extracted all the files to and you will have a copy of FPE.
So
you can have IE 5.5 and a free version of FrontPage Express!
I found a copy of IE 5.0 on the Microsoft Year2000 Resources
CD and copied Fpesetup.cab
to a new folder then extracted the contents and made a shortcut
to fpxpress.exe in my Start Progams menu.
3/17/01 Installed Cookie Crusher -extracted cook211.exe (Zip file) to
C:\CookieCr and ran setup.
-Setup program failed (see faqs CCnotes.txt) so I extracted the
cooke21.zip to C:\CookieCr folder and ran "C:\CookieCr\Cookie Cruncher.exe"
and configured for Netscape and IE:
path for IE cookies was C:\Winodws\Cookies\
st4unst.000 file was created in C:\Windows as st4unst.000
(deleted 3-17-01)
Got message to either delete or keep C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\stkit432.dl
so I kept it. AW
--------from faqs--------
Every time I try to install the cookie cruncher program, I get the =4/2/01 Changed Virtual Memory settings to 80 MB.
following error message: Unable to locate C:\st4unst.000 installation is =
then terminated.
That error occurs when there is a program that is conflicting with Cookie
Cruncher's Setup file. Usually Anti-virus and first aide programs will cause these
conflicts. To resolve the problem, quit all other programs then restart setup.exe.If the problem still exist, we have provided Cookie Cruncher without the setup file.
Download here http://home1.gte.net/dsavrnoc/cookie/cooke21.zip
and unzip the file to Cookie Crucher's permanent directory
4/10/01 Sheldon tried playing a shockwave game in Netscape 4.61 today
and got a message that he needed a newer
version (the message said a plugin, I think) so I DL'ed and installed
Shockwave player 8.0 which included Flash
5.0 r41 (My previous Shockwave version was 7.02..the Flash version
was 4 r something) The install had
Netscape 4.61 highlighted, and I saw a button to select another browser,
so I expected that I would either have
to reinstall if for IE or have to redownload and install with IE open.
Anyway, after the install, which I did with everything closed, it opened
NS4.61 and the dialer, to download the
rest of the installation files. Checked out the gamesite in Netscape
and it worked fine. Then I did a reboot I
went back to the same gamesite in Internet Explorer and the game loaded
up and played with no problem!
I checked in Windows\System\Macromed and I now have two folders, Shockwave
and Shockwave 8, and my
C:\Windows\System\Macromed\Flash folder has swflash.ocx dated todays
date, version 5.0.42.0 so I guess IE has already been updated. - see http://www.macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/
Current Flash Player versions
The table below contains the latest Flash Player version information.
Platform Browser Player Version
Windows, Macintosh Internet Explorer (snip) "5,0,42,0
Windows, Macintosh Netscape "5,0,41,0
Shockwave 8 didn't install any Init shortcut in my StartUp
folder, and no desktop shortcuts or Start menu items were installed.
I was surprised because last time I updated Shockwave I did it in IE first,
then had to redo it in Netscape, but
maybe that was because it needed the Netscape plugin installed.
05/06/01 Went to Windows Update and installed the Critical
Update Security Update, April 2, 2001
124 KB/ Download Time: < 1 min This update resolves the "Erroneous
VeriSign-Issued Digital Certificates Pose Spoofing Hazard" security vulnerability,
and is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS01-017. Download now
to prevent an unauthorized user from running code on your computer by digitally
signing programs as "Microsoft Corporation".
5/07/01 Went to Dialpad.com and got message about Java Packagew Manager download, asked if I wanted to overwrite package, 'dialpad.us', said Yes. Dialpad is working.
5/24/01 - Installed the WMP 6.4 Buffer Overrun update
WMSU47357.exe
(closed all programs first weith cad) I went into WMP options
and deselected (UNchecked) the new option
"Allow Internet sites to uniquely identify your player"
as outlined in
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms01-029.asp
060401 Installed Housecall Online scanner in IE5.5 online.. Was
asked to install vscan53.cab, said OK. Later found copy of wsock32.dll
in C:\Windos\Temp along with a text file, TmuDump.txt:, containing information
as follows:

File copied to Alice\Setup\Housecall_IE folder.
6/5/01 DL'ed Fprot for DOS and unzipped to C:\Fprotdos folder with shortcut in Start Programs. PIF icon changed to fprot.ico Copied unzipped files to floppy disks. Also DL'ed sign.def - fp-def.zip 5/17/01 and macro.def - macrodef2.zip 5/29/01 updates and unzipped to C:\Fprot overwriting existing files.
6/22/01 I made F-Prot for Dos boot floppy following directions given at http://claymania.com/f-prot.html including making the config.sys using edit a:\config.sys, typing in the three lines and saving onto the first floppy, then copied the sign.def and sign2.def files to a second floppy and also downloaded the nomacro.def and renamed it macro.def on the second floppy.
Creating a floppy "boot disk" and F-PROT scanner set:7/6/01 Went to housecall in IE and had to download again. Found hcscan.html and another Tmudump.txt file in Windows\Temp. Later found another copy of wsock32.dll.Insert an empty floppy and type the following commands at the DOS prompt:

dos=high, umbCopy F-PROT.EXE and ENGLISH.TX0 onto this new system boot disk and write
protect it.Insert another empty floppy and copy SIGN.DEF, SIGN2.DEF and NOMACRO.DEF
onto the second diskette. Then rename NOMACRO.DEF to MACRO.DEF on the
second disk and write protect it. Download nomacro.def from ftp.complex.is if it's
missing from your file set.NOTE: Later on I also copied my F-PROT.INI file from the program folder to the first floppy, aftwer first configuring my f-prot scanning options the way I wanted. AW
7/27/01 DLed Fprot 310 from Frisk software placed in C:\Fprot310 folder
7/28/01 Backed up then deleted Netscape leadfut profile using profile
manager. Then rebooted.
Lost most newsgroups in Wyman profile. The News folders in my
profile still contained the news host (server) folders [INCLUDING
some that I had deleted long ago, like 1NOL, stangely enough] and .rc files,
whatever they are, but all the newsgroups, and the servers
except for ATT and news.grc.com were gone from Messenger. I
do remember a problem with the grc server and at one point I had two news.grc.com
listed so maybe that's why it was still there.
Copied back leadfut folder and created the leadfut profile again.
Copied over the Leadfut News folder contents to the Wyman News folder
(first deleting contents of Wyman News). Saw later I still had extra
Newshost folders. Updated my leadfut profile files, copying over
all mail folders, addressbook, dic, bookmarks, cookies from wyman..
Made a new wymette profile then subscribed to newsservers, including
news.grc.com, and groups. Deleted contents of NEWS folder from both
wyman and leadfut and copied over contents from wymette. Backed up
and deleted all profiles except wyman. Afterwards, all NG entries
except grc.com and att servers were gone again. Set up leadfut
profile again. Those were gone too! Resubscribed again, except NO
GRC.com and deleted the leadfut profile. ater on
I fould a Netscape article saying to check the path to your NEWS folder
in preferences. Also, could be a corrupt NEWS folder. I decided to
save links to my main newsgroups, which could be used to resubscribe quickly
by clicking on them.
8/2/01 uninstalled Netscape AIM 4.1
Rebooted Ran ERU harddrive only.
Deleted nsreg.dat and netscape.ini (backed up first)
Uninstalled NS 4.61. Rebooted.
I compared my Plugins folder after the NS 4.61 uninstall and it showed
20 files. My back up had 29. The missing files were:
npaudio.dll, npavi32.dll, npbeatsp.dll, npbeatSP (no extension) npnull32.dll,
npswf32.dll (shockwave flash) cppack1.jar npaudio.zip npavi.zip
So, in addition to the Netscape Multimedia (audio and video) plugins,
which I expected to be missing, my Shockwave Flash 5.0 r41 plugin
was gone. I kind of expected that since I did install it with NS4.61
but I was wondering if Netscape was smart enough to know that I had updated
it since then (it wasn't).
Deleted leftover files from .....\Communicator and .....\Program folders,
uisng "tips" article at
www.UFAQ.org/commonly/40x_win_upgrade.html but left the signed0.db
and signed.db in the wyman profile folder.
8/2/01 Installed NS 4.78 using the NS4.78 setup I downloaded last week . DSid CAD first, sent to Start Run, browsed to the cc32d478.exe then chose custom install. Deselected everything except Comm 4.78 and Multimedia support. Under Multimedia support I selected audio/video playback and Shockwave Flash (deselected the others).
Under Netscape Communicator EXTENSIONS, I left html and .js (javascript source) with Netscape and deselected jpg and gif (left those with IE) I took a chance and during the NS4.78 install I included the Shockwave Flash plugin along with the audio and video and, guess what? It installed the exact version that I had before, 5.0 r41, so I guess I'm all set.
Had to reenter screen name and reset preferences in AOL Instant Messenger
4.3 but it's working fine it seems. The old aim shortcut was deleted,
and I placed a new one pointing to the ...\Program\AIM folder on my Start
menu.
Also an AOL signup shortcut appeared on the desktop which I moved to
my shortcut folder (should delete it...points to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\Aol30us.exe)
Noticed newsgroups were not saved except for one group in news.grc.com.
Deleted the news.grc.com server and resubscribed using saved email links
to newsgroups. Closed Netscape deleted all News folders and files.
Copied News folder from wymette backup (no grc group) Better not
subscribe to news.gc in case that's the problem.
But, now there are NO newsgroups at all, just the empty att server.
Rebooted, and Windows stopped loading at the clouds screen, then the
screen went blank, then did another
soft boot all by itself and Safe Mode came up preselected in the Startup
menu. Well I switched to Normal Mode and hit it, but the same
thing happened - stopped loading at the clouds screen, then the screen
went black, then did another soft boot and the Startup menu came up with
Safe Modre selected again! Entered Safe Mode then shut down completely,
then rebooted and all was fine. That might have been what happeded when
I did the Ad-Aware install awhile back, so maybe it had nothing to do with
Ad-Aware and my machine has reboot problems sometimes. Anyway, I've
since rebooted and it works fine now.
This time I closed netscape, deleted the entire wyman News folder (created a new empty News folder), restarted Netscape and started fresh, resubscribing using the links. Did not go to news.grc.com. Just to be sure I also went to Netscape preferences and browsed to the path to the wyman\news folder. Rebooted. All ok. Backed up entire wyman profile and copied News folder to leadfut.
8/3/01 Had a few minor quirks. Had to change the email program in Enternet Explorer options back to Outlook Express (it had been changed to Netscape Messenger, even though my default email program still shows up as OE) but that was minor. I did get a Netscape Not Responding when I did a CAD with Netscape open after trying to download a java applet for Yahoo games but after I ended task and reopened Netscape and went back to the site the applet loaded.
Also I can't open talkback.exe either directly or from the start programs
Netscape....Quality Feedback Agent shortcut.
Nothing happens. Not really bad, I just wanted to make sure it
was still turned off. Iread on the NG that sometimes it isn't
installed with higher versions of 4.7. Does yours work?
Maybe because I followed the tips at
http://www.UFAQ.org/commonly/40x_win_upgrade.html
Tips for Upgrading to a Later Communicator which say:
Delete the files in the \Communicator directory, and leave the sub directories
intact. Under
\Communicator\Program\ delete any files there, and the java directory
[I didn't find a java directory]
Leave the other subdirectories intact.
So maybe one of the files I deleted disabled talkback? I did look
at the ufaqs and Netscape help and found a page at
http://help.netscape.com/kb/consumer/19990914-1.html
mentioning needing master.ini
The default location is C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\master.ini
but the last version they mentioned was 4.61 so I must have deleted
it when I cleared the \Communicator\Program\ directory of all files.
Who knows. As long as it never opens I'm happy.
By the way, the tips also said In the \users\username\ directories, remove the signed applet files if they are there. Nothing else. What are signed applet files? I saw signed.db and signed0.db and thought to delete them but wasn't sure so I left them.
BTW I think I got the disappearing NG problem licked finally (it reappeared). I completely deleted my News directory then created a new empty News folder in my Wyman profile and went into preferences News Server and browsed to the path to the new News folder and selected it just to be on the safe side. Then I resubscribed using the links I sent you before (boy those came in handy) The article at http://help.netscape.com/kb/consumer/19980915-60.html mentioned the the entire News folder could be corrupted Also found a helpful article at http://www.UFAQ.org/navcom/subscr.html saying the fat file could have been corrupted. (I thought I previously emptied the entire contents but who knows).
8/11/01 Dl'ed and installed RealPlayer 8 (basic, minimum install) deselected
all options except desktop shortcut.
In custom media types, selected mpeg, incl mp3, and .wav (later some
wav files didn't play so I switched .wav back to wmp in wmp view options
formats).
8/14/01 renamed the wordview NCompass plugin Npdoc.dll in NS4.78 to XNpdoc.dll. Now .doc files open in wordview helper application and not the plugin. Now Wordview file shows in preferences applications with .doc extension as well as .rtf Decided to leave it enabled in NS 3.04.
8/14/01 deleted the C:Windows\Options\Cabs\Aol30us.exe and shortcut
created when NS4.78 installed
8/14/01 Installed Sun Java Plugin for Netscape C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE.
Now in NS4.78 Preverences Advanced there is a Java Plugin checkbox.
Tried it out with Yahoo Games. It creates a systray icon when running,
until Netscape closes. Noticed the plugin is enable in NS3.04 in About
Plugins but no option to enable or disable and Yahoo Games doesn't turn
it on.
8/15/01 All 3 Wav File types deleted in NS 4.78 preferences, Navigator
Applications
(leftovers from RP8 wav association which I tried for 1 day then returned
association to wmp)
File name Wav File (3 separate files)
Extension WAV
MIME: audio/x-pn-windows-acm
MIME: audio/x-pn-windows-pcm
MIME: audio/x-pn-wav
Handled by: C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe /m audio/wav
Note that NS3.04 still show these. You can't delete associateions
in NS3.04, only edit them.
It doesn't matter anyway since these work in NS3.04 email while the
audio/wav don't work in email.
I then noticed in my sent mail that the MIME type for Type:
WAV changed back to
(audio/wav) after doing the above. It was previously audio/x-pn-windows-pcm
then switched to
-acm when I deleted pcm!
8/15/01 in NS 3.04 plugins, copied Shockwave plugins from NS4.78 since
I noticed that these were never updated when I installed Shockwave8:
Npswf32.dll Np32dsw.dll and Shockwave Plugin.class and also the Np32dsw
folder
Tested NS3.04 on candystand site, minigolf game worked fine.
8/19/01 Noticed .mov and .qt files were no longer associated with wmp but with actmovie (old movie player) so I reasociated in wmp view options formats
8/20/01 unchecked "wake up computer when phone rings" in Control Panel Power Advanced. Tried out Low Power Standby for monitor after 20 minutes in Display Screensaver tab.. Later unchecked it and put screensaver back after getting strange striped monitor screen a week later when it woke up.
8/21/01 DL'ed and installed CTSPD092.zip using Winzip Wizard.
Ran CTSPD and got error, "at least one Dimm with wrong Dmm found".
but at least it did show 3 dimms installed so I know the socket is good.
Could be Laura's is only showing 1/2 the ram (16 not 32) as
Dimm1 (Pny) 32mb checksum error "22 not ok".
Dimm 3 16mb
Dimm 5 Truevision 32 mb
8/26/01 Installed Irfanview 3.51 (image viewer/editor and media player)
left all file types unchecked and put
shortcut in C:\Windows\Sendto
9/23/01 booted with F-Prot floppy, at the A::\> typed f-prot /loaddef
and inserted the second disk (with the virus definition files) and did
a scan of C-drive Got one suspicious file, cute.exe that mentioned
a joke program but no virus. One problem: since I changed the
f-prot scan options, when I QUIT the program I was asked to
save the new setup I must have said YES since I got an error afterwards,
that it could not create an f-prot.ini file.
since the virus def floppy was write-protected. I probably could
have UN-protected the first disk and let the f-prot.ini be written,
then re-protect it. I later thought of setting up f-prot the way
I will be using it from floppy disk, saving the settings to update
f-prot.ini then copying f-prot.ini to the boot floppy, which I did.
Another problem, at one point I got a command.com error. I *think*
I simply typed
command.com and entered (might have switched to C: first)
Note: I also could have reinserted the first F-Prot floppy, which
contains command.com.
To exit true Dos and get into Windows I did a Ctrl/Alt Delete at the
command prompt.
9/24/01 added to prefs.js file to disable (remove) Netscape shop button:
user_pref("browser.chrome.disableMyShopping", true);
9/30/01 Iinstalled IE 5.5 SP2 I did the online install and it
went well.
Besides the browser I did OE, VBS support. IE Help. Browsing
Enhancements and ICW. The download was
10.676 KB and took about 40 minutes at 44K. The install itself
was a no-brainer. After copying files (including a new Address book
it seems) it backed up and updated configuration and got a message, "If
you need to reinstall int the future, run Ie5setup.exe from C:\Windows
Update\Setup Files.:. I clicked Finish and that restarted the computer.
Got a Windows Update box saying that Windows is now setting up various
components, then desktop loaded and got another notice about Personalized
Settings. Started IE and got an MSN screen with "run once" in the
title bar and clicked a box to keep the Language and country settings.
In Help About IE it had Version 5.5.4807.2300 128-bit and Version SP2
Tested Real Player, worked ok it seems.
Afterwards I noticed that vbs and vbe files were again assoiciated with
wscript.exe even though noscript.exe still showed
disables so I hasd to re-enable tnen disable and that did the trick.
Did the same in Startup Manager for loadwc
(reenabled, then disabled) as it was running again at startup.
Also rebooted and made Netscape the default again.
10/2/01 noticed double-clicking PDF gave an error, but opening Acrobat3 and browsing to file did not. Checked Filetypes and PDF somehow got reassociated with old lotus acroread program. Edited Open action to C:\Acrobat3\Reader\AcroRd32.exe "%1" based on info in PDE FyleType.
0/9/01 In tweakUI, New tab, UNchecked:
Lotus Freelance
123 worksheet
Conference Frame
Internet Phone User
Briefcase
123 workbook
Microsoft Data Link
Netscape Hypertext Document
RO Fax Document
10/9/01 Noticed Chaincast Proxie in Add/Remove Programs and in Program
Files (dated 10/8/01)
Sheldon said he did install something for WGR radio. Websearch
mentioned it had to do with streaming media.
10/10/01 went to security1.norton.com and installed the online scanner in IE....Semantic Utilities...Scan for Viruses....Virus Definitions.
10/11/01 Made vnbt.386 NOT read-only and renamed it vnbt.38X (backed
it up first to Alice\Backup\Windows\System)
then did a Norton System Security Check and showed all ports closed
and system safe, Same with Shields up. MAY need to rename it
back if installing cable modem but then Netbeui would also need to be reinstalled.
10-18-01 I found 2 dead shortcuts to my old AOL Instant Messenger
4.x in my Start Programs AOL Instant Messenger folder.
I had previously uninstalled IM 4.x before installing Netscape 4.78
which included a newer AIM 4.3.
I went into the shortcut properties for the program shortcut and uninstaller
and clicked on "find target".
Windows searched and offered to reassociate the shortcut to the aim.exe
and uninstaller in the Netscape folder.
I said OK, and also adjusted the "start in" path. I also
fixed up F-Prot.exe program tab and shortcut to point to F-Prot.ico and
changed CMD line from E:\F-prot~1\F-Prot.exe to C:\Fprot310\F-prot.exe
(getting errors before about path)
10/28/01 made IE the default browser then tried Interent Shortcuts and they now work. Clicked "do not perform this check in the future" and said NO when Netscape asked to be made the default. I'll need a prefs.js edit to get it to ask again - see http://www.UFAQ.org/commonly/comm_index.html
10/29/01 went to http://www.ufaq.org/commonly/no_import.html
and downloaded the Comm4.5 Import Utility:
(quote from the site)
Import Utility Not Found
Applies to: Communicator 4.5x
Operating Systems: Windows 95, Windows 98
and Windows NT
Problem: "When I click File | Import, it says
'Application Not Found'. How can I import messages and address
books?"
Solution:
If you upgraded to Communicator 4.5 via SmartUpdate,
the import utility may not have been installed.
SmartUpdate can be used to install it by clicking
on this link:
Communicator 4.5 Import Utility
Once the install is complete, the import utility
should now work.
Installed and Rebooted.
Then got the idea to uninstall (smartupdate) and to rerun Netscape 4.78
setup. Just installed the Import utility. AIM reloaded.
Afterwards Edit Preferences wouldn't open. Tired replacing prefs.js
and other files in the wyman older. Also tried new profile.
Still didn;t work soI reran setup and added browser plus Import Utility.
That fixed it.
11/11/01Uninstalled The Palace C:\PALACE\ and all files using Aptiva Installer.
11/12/01 Uninstalled Internet Voice Mail using Aptiva Installer. C:\PROGRA~1\VOCALTEC\IVMAIL\IVMAIL.EXE
Found two leftover files incl. empty adb.dat file and a ivmail.reg
file. deleted both along with IVMAIL folder.
11/13/01 renamed vnbt.38X back to vnbt.386 rebooted (will need vnbt.386 if ever setting up Direct Cable Connection)
11/13/01 installed through WindowsUpdate: Security Update, October 10,
2001 (Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2)

again later. Finally installed Just the Security Update, October

Malformed "Dotless" IP Address Can Cause a Web Page to Be Handled in the Intranet Zone
(one file missing, another is older date (?) but same size and similar version
The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

11/14 found Xujqugun.tmp folder in Netscape mail. It included
copies of all Inbox emails. Deleted the emails in Netscape then closed
Netscape and deleted the Xujqugun.tmp and Xujqugun.tmp .snm files in the
Mail folder.
11/15/01 Ran Regedit and deleted the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.mov as IE5.5sp2 does not support netscape plugins.
First I exported the key. The REG file created was:
------------------------------------------------------------------
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.mov]
"Content Type"="video/quicktime"
"Version"="1.1.0.0"
@="QuickTime Plug-In"
"Location"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\NETSCAPE\\COMMUNICATOR\\PROGRAM\\PLUGINS\\npqtw32.dll"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
However, .mov files still won't open in IE although they do in Netscape,
and after a reboot the key came back!
Then I renamed the npqtw32.dll to Xnpqtw32.dll in Communicator Plugins
(left navigator alone) and deleted the key again.
I checked in IE and .swf files play fine. I found
http://www.madblast.com/oska/humor_warnings.swf and it opens fine in
Internet Explorer. I'm guessing that IE uses the swflash.ocx
in the Windows\System\Macromed\flash folder (Flash
Player 5.0 r42) and that overrides the netscape plugin.
11/18/01 Tried EZButtons Help button. Got message about expired certificate (Access Aptiva tried to open but instead got a blank white box on desktop) I said YES to install a new one and the Access Aptiva screen came up but nothing worked. CAD showed Access Aptiva and eazyb.exe were running. Eazyb.exe "not responding" when ending task. Tried running Access Aptiva by itself but it still didn't work.. ACSA running too in CAD box.
Regedit done to change EZbuttons Help button from Access Aptiva to the
"How Do I? help file by changing two values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\IBM\EZButtons\Applications\Aptiva
Helper\Launch\Action1
[Access Aptiva hasn't worked since I installed IE5] I first highlighted
the Action1 key and exported it which created a reg file, then I selected
DIR in the right pane and clicked EDIT Modify to show C:\ibmtools\Discover
& Help Did the same for FILE to show C:\ibmtools\Discover
& Help\H_INTDEF.HLP
The old values were C:\ibmtools\access and C:\ibmtools\access\eazyb.exe.
My first attempt didn't work . When I hit the EZbuttons Hrelp
button I got an error box saying
that the file "C:\ibmtools\Discover & Help\H_INTDEF.HLP" couldn't
be found. (Turned out I had added
quotes where they didn't belong) I deleted the key then double-clicked
the exported .reg file I made
beforehand, and started over, this time leaving out the quotes in the
Modify window for both DIR and File.
This time it worked.
11/21/01 DL'ed the WMP asf patch wm308567.exe (pending)
11/23/01 Installed Windows Share-Level Password Critical Update
From WindowsUpdate: "How to uninstall: Click Start, point to Find,
and then click Files or Folders. Search for 273991UN.INF. When the file
is displayed, right-click on the file and click Install."

Checked and my version of Vserver.vxd is 4.10.1113 dated 10/17/2000,
in both
Windows\System and Windows\Options\Cabs.
11/25/01 Associated .swf files with Iexplore using the Open With box that came up when double-clicking swf file. New Filetype Shockwave Flash Object was created - I changed icon to green globe. Left mime type alone as application/futuresplash and default ext as spl since swf is also shown. The mime type application x/shockwave flash is the correct one for swf but those files open in Netscape plugin ok and IE is also ok when opening swf files from the net so I'll leave as is.
11/26/01 Enabled IPE Real Time Protection for File Monitor (open,
execute, heuristics) and Boot Floppy
Opened the AT&T Worldnet Connectoid clicked the Dial Properties
button and, on the My Locations screen that came up, entered "732" in the
field, "to access an outside line, first dial ___ for local".
Now shows as 732 368 3473.
11/29/01 Turned off IPE Realtime Protection rebooted and ran the WMPasf
patch Wm308567.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q308/5/67.asp
says the following files should be shown

12-03-01 Did the folllowing for Netscape mail: 1.Go to the Edit
menu and select Preferences. 2.Expand Mail & Newsgroups and click
on Disk Space. 3.Click to place a checkmark next to "Do not store
messages locally that are larger than xx KB." You can specify
the size limit for stored messages here. The default is 50KB.
12-6-01 applied the IE5.5sp2CookieData patch, Q312461. (CAD done first,
IPE realtime disabled beforehand) According to the kb article, The English
version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

06-Jun-2000 15:43 5.50.4134.600

...same size.....???
08-Nov-2001 18:27 5.50.4911.800 482,064
Wininet.dll ....I show same
I did a groups.google search and came up with this, from a mvp:
"There are two informations: the version number and the file date.
File dates often are "touched", so that all files
of a single application have the same date." .... "Backup the currently
used DLL and replace it with the other one. If it helps, you are done.
If it gets worse, use the backup to undo your change." so I extracted the
06-06-00 4.71.16.0 version of W95inf32.dll and placed it in my Alice\Backup\Windows\System\NEW
folder, just in case. I also placed a backup of the existing 09-17-96
0017 version in the OLDfiles folder. I would not replace it just
yet since the file size is the same, unless I was having problems.
12/9/01 Noticed WinZip had taken over .cab files so I reinstalled CabView by r-clicking the cabview.inf file, selected install (forgot to disable IPE) Put shortcut to WinZip in the sendto folder (for cab files)
12/10/01 copied scanreg.exe from JoeyR's scanreg.zip/scanreg.exe download - see scanreg.txt) and placed it on a floppy disk and in C:\Alice\DOS\scanreg folder (later moved yto C:\Windows\Command folder).
Noticed 2 Active X Controls Java RunTime Environment 1.31. in C:\Downloaded Program Files are "Damaged" 0 bytes but found out that it is normal to show this
12/18/01 Deleted the Trash.sbd folder and contents in Netscape
Users Wyman Mail folder (copied to Backup first)
Seems this was an extra folder in the Inbox that was appearing as a
random-lettered .tmp file with copies of all the inbox messages every so
often. Recycle bin shows XIAEMVHQ.tmp and XIAEMVHQ.tmp.snm files
were deleted.
12/19/01 Installed the new Yahoo Messenger online. It automatically closed Yahoo Messenger while it was installing, then opened the new one afterwards. (NEW ymsgr_s.exe 2286Kfound in Temp, copied to Alice\Setup folder)
12/20/01 Went to Shockwave Download page in IE and installed Shockwave Player 8.5. That placed an entry for Shockwave ActiveX Control in Windows\ Downloaded Program Files, but no SW Flash Object - SW Flash was not updated since we already have the latest version. Rebooted.
12/20/01 Downladed Shockwave 8.5 for Netscape (664K) and installed it (had to complete the install online) then reran setup and chose the Netscspe 3.04 folder, forgetting that you needed Netscape 4.xx to install SW8.5. Afterwards S4.78 tried to open first but I copied the URL and opened 3.,04 myself. A soon as I went to the Shockwave site in NS3.04 to complete the install I got an IPF. I restred the old NS3.04 Plugins from a backup by copying it on top of the Plugins folder. I noticed an extra file, shockwave flash.class so I removed it, placing it in Backup.
01-02-02 Went to Add/Remove IE5.5 and did a REPAIR. Rebooted. still no URL:http, ftp. gopher filetypes. Had to redo the April2 2001 critical update in IE Windows Update (normal - need to reinstall whenever upgrading or reinstalling IE)
01-03-02 installed Q313675 IE5.5Sp2 Security Update, December 13, 2001
1-04-02 IPE upd 1740 In AIM Preferences. "Privacy" section, clicked "Allow Only Users on My Buddy List" under "Who Can Contact Me"
01-08-02 Scandisk Error found:
"The "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MACROMED\SHOCKW~2\XTRAS\DOWNLOAD\MACROM~1\HAVOKW32'
folder cannot be opened in MS-DOS mode because its MS-DOS name, including
the names of any folders it is in, is longer than 66 characters" multiple
times.I chose "repair by moving". Afterwards I copied the C:\scandisk.log
of 1-8-02 as C:\scandisklog.txt - all errors have to do with a single
folder:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MACROMED\SHOCKW~2\XTRAS\DOWNLOAD\MACROM~1\HAVOKW32
(Shockw~2 = Shockwave8 folder). the top-level folder is C:\ which
is where the HAVOKW32 folder was moved.
(NOTE: later moved the HAVOKW32 folder to Alice\Tempsave folder)
01-13-02 Searched C:\Windows\Cookies for text containing GUID and found 5, Microsoft, MSN, MSNBC, StreamAudio and www.space. Deleted these and other cookies from Windows\TIF so that total cookies went down to 50 (it adjusted automatically in C:\Windows\Cookies)
1/17/02 in Network, added Netbeui Protocol as I had removed if before
installing DUN 1.3 and it will be needed for Direct Cable Connection and/or
DSL or Cable Modem.
R-Click Network Neighbothood, Properties, ADD protocol: Microsoft
- NetBeui. In Properties of NetBeui > Dial-Up Adapter and NetBeui
> Dial-Up Adapter #2 Client for Microsoft Netaorks was pre-selected.
02-02-02 installed RealMedia File Format Update http://www.service.real.com/help/faq/security/bufferoverrun.html
"On January 17th, 2002, a security exploit affecting RealPlayer 8 was
brought to the attention of
